Keep Finger Out Of Nutts

We spent last night at the MedStop urgent care for Izzy.  All kids are sick with croup this week, Izzy was particularly sick last night, fever, vomiting from coughing so much, unable to eat because of congestion....the works.  Loaded up all four kids for a few hours of fun sitting in waiting rooms.  It was great.  by the time we left, at 9:30, the pharmacies were closed, so we went home.  This morning I had big plans of dropping the baby's prescription off, but at 8:45 Ami came to me, tears in his eyes, and showed me the huge nut stuck on his finger.  He had been trying to get it off himself, but couldn't.  I tried oil and liquid soap, and it was just stuck.  Luckily, it is the weekend and the clinic we normally go to is closed, so we got an immediate referral to the ER.  That's us, waiting in the photo above..everyone sick as dogs....
Ami showing off his hardened steel bling..........

We got back pretty quickly.....considering thre was a heart attack patient right before us....

Enjoying the patient room before the pain....

First the PA tried to pull it off, wrapped the finger in fishing twine and tried to twist it off, everything.  No dice.  Then they had to numb the finger.  Poor Ami had to have 4 shots of lidocaine all around the finger, he was very brave about it...i thought he would scream and cry, but he didn't.  Those tiny dots are the shots.....as soon as his finger was numb the PA tried harder to twist it off, but it was really stuck.  Thy brought in the ring cutter, which made some tiny grooves in the nut before sputtering out and failing.  You can see it below.....

The PA had to go to Home Depot to buy a Dremel Tool.  It worked....it shot sparks everywhere, but my camera didn't show it.....they were flying everywhere.  The nurse was spraying the finger and tool with cold water to try to keep Ami from being burned...Ami cried a little at this part, but quietly, I know it hurt him because it got really hot and burned his finger a little, but the nut came off finally!

This is about 3 hours later...other than a few tiny burns and raw spots, it's back to normal.  It was another 3 hours spent at the ER.  Better that than a finger turning black and falling off and gangrene....

 Moral of the story........
